Utilise Your Safety Dave Caravan Camera with Your Factory Screen

If you want to integrate your existing Safety Dave caravan camera with your factory screen, we’ve got you covered! This kit includes the hardwire cable as standard, but you may need additional items depending on what’s already installed on your caravan.

Step 1: Check Your Camera Type

  • AHD or CVBS Format?
    • AHD Camera (January 2023 or later): You’ll need an AHD to CVBS converter ($120).
    • CVBS Camera (Before January 2023): No converter is needed.

Step 2: Do You Already Have a Car Kit?

Step 3: Check Your Drawbar Plug

Look at the plug on your caravan’s drawbar to determine what else you need:

  1. Chrome 5-Pin Socket: (See Figure A):
  2. 4-Pin Aviation Plug (See Figure B):
    You have two options:

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if you have the 24.5 model with the touring pack or 360° cameras you should have preinstalled wiring underneath your glove box.

If you require the entire caravan kit, please see product here

If you already have a Safety Dave caravan camera and wish to utilise it please click here

Ford’s 24.5 touring pack includes pre-installed wiring under the glove box. If your vehicle has 360° cameras, it likely includes this wiring and a pre-installed trailer camera icon in the software.

For other Next Gen Ranger / Everest vehicles with Sync 4, there is a plug behind the cluster panel for connecting a trailer camera. If you require this plug, Ford will need to activate the trailer camera function in the head unit.

Yes you can check your vehicle for the wires as they are located underneath your glove box (pictures below):

In their recently revised Body Building manual, all the information is located on page 114-116:

Reprogramming of the APIM and the IPMA using the FDRS will be required to allow the IPMA to display the auxiliary rear view camera whilst the vehicle is moving. See your local Ford Dealer or National Sales agent for further information on the APIM reprogramming’

‘Only vehicles with Digital Rear Vision and/or 360 deg Cameras (J3KAH or J3KAR) have the IPMA capability to support aftermarket fitment of an Auxiliary camera (NTSC format)’

We’re not entirely sure why this feature cannot be activated, as we know it can be enabled using a Forscan tool.

There have been various explanations as to why it might not work, but we do know that the 24.5 versions function above 8 km/h. Unfortunately, we don’t have a definitive answer as to why it cannot be activated by Ford dealers in some cases.

Unfortunately, no. The plug behind the cluster panel is entirely different from the ute versions, so it cannot be connected to anything.

Our workshop tests show that only CVBS NTSC cameras are compatible with the Ford Factory screen. If your camera is AHD, our converter will change the video signal from AHD to CVBS. Please note that there will be a slight drop in quality.

Our standard kit includes an extension cable and an adaptor that connects directly to the drawbar plug. This is not a curly cord setup, which typically involves having a socket on your caravan, another on the back of your car, and a curly cord to connect the two.

If you prefer a curly cord setup, we recommend the WOZA kit with the Safety Dave Adaptor.

That’s fine, please reach out to us with as much information as you can obtain and we can guide you in the right direction. The details below will help us determine what other parts you need:

  • When was your Safety Dave camera installed?
  • What type of plug do you have on the drawbar (if unsure, you can also take a photo and send it to us via text: 0483 930 453 or email: sales@polarisgps.com.au)
  • Were you given the rest of the Safety Dave kit from the caravan manufacturer or do you have any cabling for the car?

Take a photo of your caravan camera and the plug on your A-frame or drawbar. Text it to us at 0483 930 453, and we’ll assess it and give you advice on compatibility.

Unfortunately the cluster plug arrangement is a little too difficult to try and add a second camera.
